Having just concluded their IPL season, the Mumbai Indians, Rajasthan Royals, Kolkata Knight Riders, and the Royal Challengers Bangalore are gearing up for a massive 2023 IPL auction. If you're planning on going to any matches, consider buying tickets before the auction.
Rajasthan Royals (RR)
The Rajasthan Royals are expected to arrive at the IPL 2023 auction with a budget of 13.2 crores. Their squad will feature some new players while retaining the team's core. They will have nine slots to fill and have the chance to bid for four foreigners.
They have picked up Joe Root, Jason Holder, and Adam Zampa and have five uncapped Indians in their squad. However, they'll need to add at least one allrounder, and they should add Ben Stokes, Cameron Green, or Shakib Al Hasan if they can afford it.
The other players on the roster are Devdutt Padikkal, Akash Vashisht, Kunal Rathore, and Nathan Coulter-Nile. They've also signed Murugan Ashwin, KM Asif, and Donovan Ferreira. The big purchase for the RR was West Indies allrounder Jason Holder. For 5.75 crore, they got a hitter and bowler, much like a cricketing version of a footballer.
They also bought a wicket-keeping batsman. With the team's three top order batters in place, they can now focus on a power-hitting allrounder.
But it will be challenging to find the best allrounder, especially when other teams are bidding for them. Some players, such as Ben Stokes and Chris Gayle, need to be within reach. A good option could be a taller allrounder, such as Riyn Parag.
Rajasthan will likely spend a little more money than they'll save and may even make some bids for players they can't afford. However, the IPL 2023 mini-auction is a good sign that the Royals are gearing up to better their IPL 2022 performance.
Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB)
In the last 15 seasons of IPL, Royal Challengers Bangalore (rcb) has never won a trophy. The franchise has been eliminated in three of its previous five final matches. Despite that, it has the most loyal fan base in the league.
In the 2023 auction, Royal Challengers Bangalore made a lot of intelligent acquisitions. While they have a few players from England, they also purchased some lesser-known domestic players. They picked up Will Jacks, Avinash Singh, and Rajan Kumar. While most of their core players are retained, the franchise is looking to add a foreign seamer to serve as a backup for Josh Hazlewood. It also may look to sign Priyam Garg or Shashank Singh.
Royal Challengers will have a budget of 8.75 crores, which is the league's second-lowest purse. In context, they had only eight percent of the total bag left after the 2022 season. After the 2022 season, Royal Challengers retained most of their core players. However, they released a few players ahead of the mini-auction. RCB also traded Jason Behrendorff to Mumbai Indians.
While RCB had the second-lowest purse, they managed to fill seven slots with some smart acquisitions. They bought a batting allrounder named Will Jacks and a pacer named Reece Topley. Both players are 24 years old and have been playing for England for only a few seasons.
In addition to these four English players, Royal Challengers also picked up two overseas players. RCB brought in a left-arm pacer named Reece Topley for Rs 1.80 crore and a wicketkeeper named Himanshu Sharma for Rs 20 lakh.
All these players were purchased for around the price of a capped player. Royal Challengers will also have seven open spots in the squad.
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR)
The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have started preparations for the next season of IPL. They have retained 14 players and are ready to go into the IPL 2023 auction with a purse of 7.05 crore.
Chandrakant Pandit is their new coach. He knows the domestic circuit like the back of his hand. But he wants to get the best combination for the 2023 season.
Aside from the renowned Indian stars, the KKR will also be looking to bring in some overseas players. The franchise has eleven slots, which they can fill with up to three overseas players. However, they can look for uncapped players in the country if they still need the budget.
There are a few players who have a good chance of being in the IPL 2023 squad of the Kolkata Knight Riders. Narayan Jagadeesan and David Wiese are two such players, and both are known for their medium-paced bowling.
Other players that could be in the IPL 2023 squad include Nitish Rana, Andre Russell, Shardul Thakur, Sunil Narine, and Kulwant Khejroliya. The team is also expected to retain Chris Lynn, who can be an excellent opener.
Another allrounder that could be an excellent addition to the side is the talented Litton Das from Bangladesh. This wicketkeeper-batsman impressed cricket fans during the T20 World Cup 2022.
Meanwhile, the team has also acquired some experienced fast bowlers. David Wiese is a Namibian allrounder who has played fifteen IPL matches. So, he can provide experience and be handy in the middle overs.
Although the team has a good combination of Indian and overseas players, the team still needs to find a quality all rounder backup option. Apart from that, they are also looking for a death-bowling specialist.
Mumbai Indians
The IPL 2023 auction is around the corner, and Mumbai Indians are one of the teams participating. It will happen on December 23, and the auction will be held in Kochi, India. The team will be looking to fill in some gaps in their squad. They are likely to try and sign an overseas player. But they may also go after some senior Indian spinners.
Mumbai already has some big names, including Ishan Kishan and Mohd. Arshad Khan, and Ramandeep Singh. However, they still need a backup fast bowler to help with Jasprit Bumrah.
Besides that, they need a second wicketkeeper. While they can use Asian seamers like Tabraiz Shamsi and Sikandar Raza, they will have to do without some of the more expensive overseas spinners.
Some players they have acquired in the past two years include Jason Behrendorff, Vishnu Vinod, Dewald Brevis, and Piyush Chawla. If they have to replace a player in the future, they could consider bringing in a fast bowling allrounder, such as Sam Curran.
The team has added an Australian fast bowler, Jhye Richardson, for a fee of Rs 1.5 crore. This will help the team get extra speed in their attack. In addition, Mumbai has made an effort to make its squad more balanced. Their top seven are among the best in the tournament.
Despite some negative performances, the team has improved dramatically since last season. And they will be aiming to make a run in the playoffs. Mumbai is in a position to make a solid bid to restock their team after losing two key players. Luckily, they have a lot of talented young players in their ranks.
Punjab Kings
The Punjab Kings are a well-established team that has been a part of the IPL for several years. However, they have never won an Indian Premier League title. They are now working on assembling a new squad for the upcoming IPL 2023 season.
One of the key players that will be needed in the Punjab Kings' squad is a top-order batsman. There are a number of other players that could fill this role. The Punjab Kings have already signed two overseas players: Liam Livingstone and Jonny Bairstow. They are also retaining a good chunk of their team.
Another vital addition is Sikandar Raza. He is an overseas allrounder, a Pakistani-born Zimbabwean international, and his all-round capabilities were evident in the T20 World Cup. Punjab also has several other international players. Their squad includes the likes of Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Prabsimran Singh, Sandeep Sharma, Ishan Porel, and Rishi Dhawan.
They also have a formidable middle order. An intense pace duo, Kagiso Rabada and Arshdeep Singh, have backed this unit. Hopefully, this will continue for the upcoming season. Punjab entered the IPL 2023 auction with a budget of INR 32.2 crore, and the team was able to outbid Lucknow SuperGiants and Mumbai Indians.
Other notable signings include Vidwath Kaverappa, Harpreet Bhatia, and Mohit Rathe. As for the other players that were released, there were nine. The final lineup of the Punjab Kings for the upcoming IPL 2023 season will be announced shortly. There are currently 22 players listed in the Punjab Kings' roster. But plenty of other players will also be available for purchase by other IPL teams.
